Growing Papayas in your Garden
When is the last time you enjoyed delicious papaya?
A few years ago, my parents delivered a box of papayas to my in-laws. It wasn’t often that we had papaya at home. Since my parents kept a few papayas to enjoy, I tried out this tropical fruit with them.
The papayas were a deep orange color, luscious and melted through your teeth as you bit into one. It was slightly sweet. Party on taste buds!
Scattered Seeds
Little did I know that a year later, small papaya trees had begun to sprout in my in-laws’ garden. My in-laws intentionally planted one tree. Surprisingly, three more trees started growing from seeds scattered by the wind. It was amazing to me that that’s all it took for beautiful papaya trees to grow in sunny California!
The Challenge!
All you will need are store bought papayas. You’ll only use the seeds. Enjoy the rest, except for the skin! You will need good soil, compost, and sunny weather. Take the season into consideration when watering your papayas. Increase the amount of water during drier seasons to ensure the soil is moist and not wet. In less than a year, you’ll be enjoying fresh papaya from your backyard!
