How To Donate Heavy Furniture

Are you ready to make your contributions today?

Here is a scenario that might have happened to you during your move –

You start moving your furniture around, getting it ready to be shipped out, and you decide to lift the corner of your navy wooden dresser today.

You barely lift it an inch.

Whoa, I completely forgot how heavy this furniture is! How in the world am I going to move it or get rid of it?

Nope! Too Heavy!

Deciding what you will keep or toss can be difficult. For example, what you do with some items will be determined mostly by their size and weight. By this, I mean the objects towards the higher end of the size and weight spectrum. These are furniture like your sectional, wooden dining table, and the armoire you inherited from your parents.

I found myself in this position when my husband moved out-of-state before me. He worked hard to move most of the larger items. However, what would I then do with the leftover stuff I could not carry by myself?

Furniture Pickups At No Cost

You will find that many nonprofits offer free pickups for unwanted furniture.  I was ecstatic to find this was the case in the Salt Lake City area.

The only big catch to this was, it was hard to schedule a pick-up!  No one would answer the phone.  Once I even loaded my car with items to give away and drove out to an urban donation center. When I arrived, the center was closed!

Even though this route didn’t work out for me, I still think it would be worth a try for you.  A few agencies you can call in your city include:

Big Brothers, Big Sisters – https://bbbsu.org/

Pay Someone To Make Your Stuff Disappear

Selling items through a local classified section helped us make some extra cash. Typically, the buyer will meet you either at your place or somewhere walkable for you. The buyer will observe the item for sale in person and usually confirm that they’ll take it. This makes it easy for you to get rid of a percentage of your stuff.

However, the reality is that some things will not sell. What then will you do with these other objects?

I researched online and decided to pay a service to take away everything I couldn’t carry alone. I chose College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving. College HUNKS came to my place and removed two mattresses, four pieces of furniture, and three framed paintings. It was quite a relief to see these items gone!

Money And Charity Can Co-Exist

I paid around $130 for this service, but before you write off companies who charge you, be sure to take a closer look!

Once I delved a little deeper into HUNKS’ website, I discovered a pleasant surprise! I learned HUNKS partnered with Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and Pick Up My Donation. When these organizations receive your donations, they choose to either recycle, resell, donate or restore the items you no longer want.

You can think of it as donating to make someone else happy and simultaneously clear out your home to be ready for your big move!

College HUNKS currently has 127 locations throughout the country, including one in Edmonton, Alberta. Use this link to see their locations and if there is one near you!

It’s time to do your good deed of the day!

In fact, you may also be doing your green deed of the day, too! As the old mantra says Reduce Reuse and Recycle today! The world will thank you for it.
