To Camp Or Not To Camp in Utah
Are you an avid or expert camper or a wannabe camper?
I am a wannabe camper. Let me explain how I know this.
The Big Move
Eight years ago my then-fiance and I moved to Utah together. Taking a new job opportunity was exciting for him. The numerous trailheads and canyons awaiting us were unfamiliar territory, but enticing as well. We decided to make a move and embarked on the new journey together.
Camping Gear Galore
Can you guess what was among our first purchases in Utah? That’s right, camping gear!
For eight years, we provided secure storage for the following items: Two foldable chairs, two sleeping bags, one sleeping bag for extreme cold conditions, a portable gas grill, two mosquito nets, a lantern, a picnic backpack set including plates, cups, wine glasses and utensils, an extra mini foldable chair with no back, and two backpacking packs. I almost forgot, we also bought a picnic bench.
Zero Camping
As you can imagine, all these items filled 60% of our storage space for eight long years. How many times did we use these items? Zero. How many times did we go camping? Nada. This is how I know we are wannabe campers.
Camping In Utah
Not only are there countless camping grounds close to Salt Lake City, but Arches National Park was also listed as a top destination to go camping in the United States:

Where To Book Your Camp Ground
When you’re ready to make reservations, find local websites which can secure your spot for you. Many times we ended up canceling our camping trip because we tried booking our campsite too late in the season. Be sure to make reservations as far ahead as you can!
On the Utah State Parks website (utahstateparks.reserveamerica.com) I selected the “tent” category and searched for availability two weeks from today for two campers. The search results included 32 pages of options- plenty of choices for booking ahead of time.
When To Go Camping
Just outside Salt Lake City, the best times to go camping would be in the Spring (May) through Fall (September). If you’re headed down to Southern Utah, where you’ll find the Mighty 5, avoid the summer season when temperatures soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Take it from me, someone who’s never gone camping in Utah.
